Wednesday Wisdom How To Get Summer Ready

It might not feel like summer is on the horizon with the cold weather we are experiencing in May, but it will soon be upon us (we hope)!

Whether you are waiting for the sun to shine at home, or you are on the countdown to a weekend in Ibiza with the lads, there's not long to go.

It now dawns on you that you still haven't joined the gym like you promised for your New Year's resolution and your body certainly isn't ‘summer ready'. Luckily, it's not too late to do something about it.

Looking good for the summer months might not bother everyone, but for those who want to feel better in their speedos, here's some things you can do in the coming weeks to get in shape.

DRINK MORE WATER

We all know deep down that we should drink more water, but whether we do it or not is a different matter. No, the water in beer doesn't count!

The recommended amount of water to drink per day for us lads is two pints. That might sound like a lot, but if you substitute a couple of those fizzy drinks you normally have, you'll be well on your way.

The benefits are clear to see, and drinking more water is the first step to getting in shape. It's proven to increase energy levels, promote weight loss and boost your immune system!

DRINK LESS ALCOHOL

Don't overlook this section, as much as you may want to! If you are serious about dropping some weight, you're going to have reduce the booze intake.

Don't pick up those four cans on the way home, and resist the urge to go to the pub. At the end of the day, it's only for a few weeks and it means you can go nuts when you're on holiday. It will make it taste all the more sweeter.

CLEAN EATING

Sorry to bring further bad news, but it's not only what you drink that needs to change, it's what you eat. This is probably the hardest thing of all to do, but if you want to look good on the beach, it's worth changing your diet for the next few weeks.

No more trips to Maccies at lunch, turn down that packet of custard creams that accompany your morning cuppa. You don't necessarily have to eat less to get in shape, it's more about eating the right stuff.

Cut out sugary foods that pile on the pounds and start eating more fruit and veg – you will soon notice the difference. It's worth looking at the likes of the Body Coach on Instagram for some simple, free advice on how to eat better.

GET IN THE GYM

Eating and drinking right will shift some weight, but if you want to get lean and have a toned torso, then you're going to have to put some hours in at the gym. No, going to the gym once a week doesn't count – that won't really do anything.

It's time to make your gym visits part of your routine; try and pencil in going every morning before work, or every evening after. It might sound like a lot, but after a couple of weeks you'll wonder why you never did it before.

If you have a bit of spare cash, looking into using a personal trainer is a good idea. They will be able to tailor your training plan to what you want and ensure you're getting the most out of your visits.

SLEEP RIGHT

We're not saying you need to get more sleep as such, but the right amount of sleep. We all hate the sound of the alarm going off in the morning, but it can be made a bit more bearable if you get the right number of hours kip.

Try getting somewhere in between six-to-eight hours sleep each night and you should wake up feeling more refreshed!

AND IF YOU JUST DON'T CARE…

If you still haven't booked a weekend away with the lads this summer, then what are you waiting for!?
